The Hidden Power of 5S

When implementing 5S and getting your workplace organised, one area I would hope to see a significant improvement in would be staff morale. Provided you have involved everyone during the change process and decision making has been shared, people will be going about their daily work with a smile.

This is where I feel 5S has hidden powers that we do not fully appreciate. Bear with me as I explain.

I recently read how an ordinary working class man, Bernie Goetz managed to dramatically reduce the crime wave in New York City on 22nd December 1984, the Saturday before Christmas, with one act.

Implementing 5S to Achieve an Organised Workplace

Applying 5S and being organised in the workplace is far more than a housekeeping exercise and having a good tidy up. 5S is one of the tools associated with lean manufacturing that will involve the workforce in managing change and provide the foundations for a successful improvement program.

  • SORT – Determine what is needed and remove the rest.
  • SET IN ORDER – A place for everything and everything in its place.
  • SHINE – Cleaning and looking for ways to keep it clean.
  • STANDARDISE – Make standards obvious and maintained.
  • SUSTAIN – Maintain high standards and constantly seek to improve.
