When implementing 5S and getting your workplace organised, one area I would hope to see a significant improvement in would be staff morale. Provided you have involved everyone during the change process and decision making has been shared, people will be going about their daily work with a smile.
This is where I feel 5S has hidden powers that we do not fully appreciate. Bear with me as I explain.
I recently read how an ordinary working class man, Bernie Goetz managed to dramatically reduce the crime wave in New York City on 22nd December 1984, the Saturday before Christmas, with one act.
How does this relate to an organised workplace? Let me tell you the story.
Applying 5S and being organised in the workplace is far more than a housekeeping exercise and having a good tidy up. 5S is one of the tools associated with lean manufacturing that will involve the workforce in managing change and provide the foundations for a successful improvement program.
‘There are no Market Leading Organisations that are Disorganised!’
Having set up my own Network Group for Manufacturers recently I have found myself talking a lot about the ‘Six Degrees of Separation’. Some attendees have heard of the term before and others not at all, so I thought I would write a few words to give my explanation for the ‘Six Degrees of Separation’ and how this impacts on smarter networking.
What is Six Degrees of Separation?
The term refers to the idea that we are only six connections away from any other person in the world by way of introduction.

How do you manage the people within your business and keep everyone motivated?
Have you ever been to a sporting event such as a football match where the manager does not attend and watch his team perform? Not very likely, not even a Sunday Pub Match because the manager is always at the sidelines to support his team. These managers are so passionate about the team and the goals they are trying to achieve wild horses wouldn’t keep them away. Continue reading

Take a moment to think about the word ‘change’ and the last time somebody directed it towards you in a conversation.
‘You need to change your attitude son’
‘Things are going to change around here from now on’
‘You’ve changed! . . . We used to get on so much better when we first met’
Now think about the whole experience at the time. Was it a positive experience? How did it make you feel? Would you rather avoid situations that involve the word change? Continue reading

What I would like to achieve from this piece of writing is to get you to think about the meaning of the word ‘inspirational’ and how this style of leadership will motivate your people. I am sure that you are extremely knowledgeable about your own products and services and have a burning ambition to be successful in business. The difficulty is getting other people to share your ambition and support your plans for the future. Continue reading

I have been running my own businesses for a while now and thought I would give something of value back to the business community by providing other business owners or wannabe business owners with (what I believe to be) the top 5 tips to being happy running your own business. This has been compiled from my own experiences and the experiences of fellow business people I have met on my journey. Continue reading

If you had a choice would you improve the financial position of your business?
Would you like an easier way to increase profit without the stress of focusing on finding new markets and lots of new customers?
I have no doubt that these are questions that you are regularly asking yourself and every man and his dog have sold you a solution that will boost your profits. So obviously you are going to skeptical about any suggestion that implementing lean manufacturing will be an easier way to increase profit. Continue reading

As the Owner, Managing Director, Operations Director or the person with sole responsibility for change then you will need to be the one driving the Lean Manufacturing implementation process. The Lean Manufacturing Champion! If you are not the person with sole responsibility then you will need to convince your Manager or Board of Directors that ‘Lean Manufacturing’ is the way forward for a profitable future. This may not be an easy task but without full buy in from the Management Team your journey will be a constant uphill struggle. Continue reading
